A Brief History of the Super Bowl
The Super Bowl began as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game in January 1967, created as part of the merger agreement between the two rival leagues. The Green Bay Packers won the first two championships convincingly, with Vince Lombardi establishing the game's trophy — which now bears his name. The event was officially renamed the "Super Bowl" beginning with Super Bowl III in January 1969.
The 1970s saw the Pittsburgh Steelers emerge as the dynasty of the decade, winning four Super Bowls in six years between 1975 and 1980 under coach Chuck Noll. The 1980s were defined by the San Francisco 49ers, who won four championships in nine years with Joe Montana at quarterback.
The 1990s belonged to the Dallas Cowboys (three wins) and the repeat-champion Buffalo Bills — who became the only team to lose four consecutive Super Bowls (1991–1994). The 2000s launched the New England Patriots dynasty under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, who would win six championships together over two decades.
The 2020s have been defined by Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, who won their first championship in 50 years in Super Bowl LIV (2020) and have since become one of the most dominant franchises in NFL history with three titles in five years.
