Super Bowl MVPs by Year: Every Super Bowl MVP Award Winner

The Pete Rozelle Trophy is awarded to the Super Bowl MVP after every game. Tom Brady holds the all-time record with five MVP awards, followed by Patrick Mahomes and Joe Montana with three each. Quarterbacks have dominated the award, though defensive players and wide receivers have also claimed the honor throughout Super Bowl history.

Most Super Bowl MVP Awards

Tom Brady's five Super Bowl MVP awards are unmatched in NFL history. He won his first with the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVI (2002) and claimed his final MVP award with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV (2021) at age 43. Patrick Mahomes is on pace to challenge Brady's record, having won three MVPs before turning 30 years old.

Joe Montana won three MVP awards across four Super Bowl victories with the San Francisco 49ers (Super Bowls XVI, XIX, and XXIV). Montana never threw an interception in four Super Bowl appearances, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest big-game performers in football history.

Non-Quarterback Super Bowl MVPs

While quarterbacks win the Super Bowl MVP award the vast majority of the time, several non-QBs have claimed the honor. Von Miller (LB, Denver Broncos, Super Bowl 50) became one of the few defensive players to win the award after recording 2.5 sacks and forcing two fumbles against Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers.

Wide receivers Julian Edelman (Super Bowl LIII) and Cooper Kupp (Super Bowl LVI) won the award in recent years. Edelman caught 10 passes for 141 yards in a defensive battle against the Rams, while Kupp caught 8 passes for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns in a comeback win against the Cincinnati Bengals.
